Attic Insulation for Summer Heat: Keeping Your Home Cool
Spray foam insulation is inexpensive and the most popular choice for insulating an attic. They’re made of recycled sand and glass, are light-weight, and are flame-resistant. Fiberglass is also water-resistant, which can reduce the risk of mold.
Loose-fill cellulose insulation, which is blown in place, is an environmentally friendly alternative to fiberglass and mineral wool insulation. It’s rated with different R-values and, over time, will lose some of its density, so it is important to add 20% more than is actually needed.
Rigid foam insulation, which is cut to size and installed against the attic’s structural components, is typically a blend of polystyrene or polyisocyanurate. It has a high R-value and can be a good solution for preventing air leaks. However, this type of insulation emits gases during and after installation, so a layer of fire-resistant material should be added.
Rigid foam can also be difficult to work with. It is a very thick material that must be installed carefully to avoid gaps or the attic’s structural elements. It requires the use of specialized equipment and, in most cases, is only available from professionals.
