If you’re building a new home or retrofitting an existing one, it’s well worth considering spray foam insulation. It’s a great way to seal leaks and improve your energy efficiency. It also can help with hot and cold spots.

Foam creates an air seal that keeps conditioned air in your home during the summer and prevents warm outdoor air from seeping into your home during the winter. It also stops drafts in walls and around doors and windows. Foam is a good choice for pier-and-beam homes or rooms over garages that are often uninsulated and have large temperature differences.

There are two kinds of spray foam insulation: open-cell and closed-cell. Open-cell products are made from small pockets of gas, usually carbon dioxide or water, that form a barrier and make the foam expand to fill spaces. They generally use lower GWP blowing agents than their closed-cell counterparts. Open-cell spray foam insulation is good for acoustic control and can be used in walls and ceilings.

Closed-cell spray foam has larger cells that form a tighter barrier. It’s ideal for commercial and residential buildings and provides a higher R-value than open-cell foam. It’s also recognized as a flood-resistant material and is appropriate for areas subject to flooding or bulk moisture.

Spray foam is applied with a special rig that’s attached to a hose. A technician inside the rig mixes and applies the foam. It’s important to understand that the process releases gases and fumes that are toxic if inhaled, so the area should be cleared during spraying (except for the person doing the spraying) and vacated for at least 24 hours afterward to allow the chemicals to dissipate.
